Tarot Card Combinations: Meanings & Pairings
Cards are words, spreads are sentences
A single tarot card is a word. Two or more cards together form a sentence, and that sentence can mean something no single card says alone. The Tower is upheaval; the Tower followed by the Star is upheaval that clears the way for healing. Learning to read combinations is what turns a list of meanings into a living reading.
This guide shares the universal principles readers use to blend cards, the patterns to watch for across a whole spread, and a library of combinations to get you started. The examples use traditional card names, with the Fortuna Tarot's court names alongside: Princess (Page), Prince (Knight), Queen, and King. They work with any deck.
Six principles for blending cards
1. Read the relationship, not two separate meanings
Don't simply add one meaning to the other. Ask how the cards change each other. A helpful habit is to treat the first card as the subject and the second as the description: the Ace of Cups (a new feeling) followed by the Eight of Wands (speed) becomes a new love that moves quickly.
2. The Major Arcana lead
When a Major and a Minor Arcana appear together, the Major sets the theme and the Minor shows how it plays out day to day. Death with the Four of Pentacles: a necessary ending (Death) that you are resisting by holding on too tightly (Four of Pentacles).
3. Check the elements
Elements can support, challenge or simply sit beside one another. This classic system, known as elemental dignities, tells you whether two cards strengthen or soften each other.
|
Pairing |
Relationship |
Effect on the reading |
|---|---|---|
|
Fire and Air |
Friendly |
Air fans the flame: ideas become action, energy rises |
|
Water and Earth |
Friendly |
Earth holds water: feelings take root and grow |
|
Fire and Water |
Opposing |
Steam and conflict: passion clashes with emotion |
|
Air and Earth |
Opposing |
Plans and practicalities pull against each other |
|
Fire and Earth |
Neutral |
Steady combination: will meets the material world |
|
Water and Air |
Neutral |
Heart and mind work side by side |
|
Same element |
Strengthening |
The element's energy is doubled, for better or worse |
For example, the Ace of Wands (Fire) beside the Ace of Swords (Air) is a brilliant idea with the drive to launch it. The same Ace of Wands beside the Ace of Cups (Water) suggests passion and feeling competing for priority.
4. Look for shared numbers
Cards that share a number speak the same chapter of the story. The Five of Cups and the Five of Swords together both carry the disruption of 5: a loss (Cups) that came from conflict (Swords). Major Arcana count too: the Hierophant (5) adds a sense of tradition or institutions to that challenge.
5. Let court cards show who or how
A court card next to a pip card often tells you who brings the energy, or how to handle it. The Queen of Pentacles with the Five of Pentacles: a nurturing, practical person who helps through hardship, or the advice to care for yourself and your resources through a lean time.
6. Notice reversals in context
A reversed card next to an upright one can show where energy is blocked. The Star reversed beside the Six of Cups may suggest hope that is stuck in the past, waiting to be renewed.
Reading patterns across a spread
Before you read any card on its own, look at the spread as a whole. Count what appears most, and notice what is missing. These patterns set the tone of the entire reading.
|
Pattern |
What it suggests |
|---|---|
|
Mostly Major Arcana |
Fate is at work. This is a significant life chapter with lessons beyond your daily control. |
|
Mostly Minor Arcana |
The situation is in your hands. Everyday choices will shape the outcome. |
|
Many Wands |
A time of passion, ambition, creative projects and taking action |
|
Many Cups |
Emotions, relationships and intuition are at the heart of the matter |
|
Many Swords |
Overthinking, conflict or important decisions; a call for clear communication |
|
Many Pentacles |
Focus on money, work, health or home and building something lasting |
|
A missing suit |
An area of life that is being neglected, or simply isn't relevant right now |
|
Many court cards |
Other people are heavily involved, or you're trying on different roles |
|
Several Aces |
Fresh starts and powerful new opportunities are arriving |
|
Repeated numbers |
The theme of that number is the key to the reading, for example three Fives point to a period of upheaval |
|
Many reversals |
Energy is blocked or turned inward; time for reflection before action |
In the Fortuna Tarot, you can also look at the balance of Divine Feminine and Divine Masculine in the court. A spread full of Princesses and Queens leans towards receptive, intuitive energy. Princes and Kings lean towards active, outward energy. A mix of both suggests harmony between the two.
Major Arcana pairings
When two Major Arcana appear together, two great forces meet. Some pairs mirror each other, some complete each other, and some tell a story of before and after.

Notice how some cards echo each other through their numbers. The Lovers (6) and the Devil (15) share a root number, since 1 + 5 = 6. Both are about bonds: one chosen freely, the other bound by fear or desire. Reducing a Major Arcana's number this way reveals hidden family ties across the deck, such as the Magician (1), the Wheel of Fortune (10) and the Sun (19).
Combinations by theme
These pairings appear often in readings about the most common questions. Use them as starting points, then let the rest of the spread refine the message.

Practise your combinations
The fastest way to master combinations is to make them a daily habit. Try this simple exercise:
- Shuffle and draw two cards.
- Write each card's keyword, element, and number.
- Check the elemental relationship: friendly, opposing, or neutral?
- Write one sentence that blends both cards, using the first as the subject and the second as the description.
- Draw a third card and expand your sentence into a short story.
Keep these sentences in your tarot journal. After a few weeks, you'll find combinations forming naturally the moment the cards hit the table.
Remember that no list of combinations is complete. Every reading is unique, and your intuition will always see connections that no guidebook can predict. Let the universal meanings be your foundation, and let the cards speak to you.
